Staffing the booth

The booth is a place for the community to gather and, most importantly, to reach out and answer questions about GraphQL!

Who can staff a booth

You do not need to be an ambassador to be a booth representative. If you are an ambassador, staffing a booth counts as one of your ambassador tasks.

People who staff the booth abide to the GraphQL Day manifesto.

Staffing the booth

  • Wear the pink t-shirt (a pink t-shirt if you don't have one already).
  • Do not stand in a circle facing inwards. Stand in a horseshoe or a line, so people feel welcome to join.
  • Always have 2 people on the booth, in case one person needs a break.

Talking to visitors

People who already know GraphQL

Ask them:

  • Can we get a testimonial? (Only if they are happy to give one.)
  • What are their pain points?

Tell them:

  • What is new in GraphQL.
  • How they can get involved.

People who do not know GraphQL

Adapt what you say to the person you are talking to.

  • Designers: think in components and their data needs. Components compose into one efficient query. Use real data in Storybook.
  • Backend developers: there is no need for a custom endpoint for each page or view. Use trusted documents for security. Limiting the data sent makes things efficient. You can build GraphQL on top of what you already have, such as REST.

Scanning badges

Most venues offer a badge scanning app. It's very useful to get an idea of who visits the booth and what the typical questions are.

It is obviously 100% optional and attendee consent is required before scanning badges. We found out that most attendees are happy to have their badge scanned for follow ups/more detailed information.

Etiquette

  • Do not be defensive.
  • Be understanding, and gently help to correct misunderstandings.
  • Smile!
